Oncology patients must be under dental supervision, so the consequences of chemotherapy or radiation treatment won’t impact the life quality of the patient, or even the success of the treatment.
Patients before their oncology treatment must undergo a full dental check up, to minimize the possibility of dental infections or trauma. If necessary, patients may proceed to specific prosthetic restorations to ensure the chewing, phonetic and functional ability.
The intraoral side effects that we mostly see from radiation, is mucositis (radio mucositis), taste disturbances, dry mouth, osteoradionecrosis, trismus (lockjaw), teeth cavities and mouth infections.
In each case, the oncologist-dentist cooperation is essential to ensure proper support for the patient.
