Treatment of periodontitis – Laser applications

With third generation LASER we offer you specialized therapeutic protocols for the treatment of periodontitis. Following a sophisticated photochemical treatment protocol that does not involve surgery, the treatment is completely painless for the patients.

With the exclusive use of LASER and with the help of special pharmaceutical preparations (antibiotics, vitamins), the radical elimination of the pathogenic microorganisms responsible for periodontitis is ensured while the occurrence of relapses and resurgence of the disease is reduced.

What is periodontitis

The term periodontal disease refers to a variety of disease states and inflammatory processes that affect the periodontal tissues, i.e. the tissues surrounding the teeth. When this disease affects the gums it is called ULTITIS. When the inflammatory processes spread to the other tissues, i.e. the jawbone that supports the teeth, the perirhinal bone and the bone, it is called PERIODONTITIS.

Causes and risks

The main cause of periodontal diseases is microbes that are present in our mouth under normal conditions without causing problems. However, when they are not removed daily due to ineffective oral hygiene, they multiply and form a sticky membrane on the teeth, the dental plaque, causing tissue damage.

The microbial plaque that remains attached to the teeth for a period of 2-3 weeks, creates a local inflammatory reaction and leads to the formation of gingivitis. In gingivitis, the inflammation is limited to the gums, which become red, soft and sensitive, swollen and bleed easily, and a general bad breath is often noticed in the mouth.

If gingivitis is left untreated, it will develop over the years into periodontitis, which is a more serious condition and needs immediate treatment.

In periodontitis, the bone of the jaw is gradually deconstructed with simultaneous receding of the gums. This process progresses and leads to the loss of tooth support.

Although the presence of bacteria is necessary for the appearance of periodontitis, however, smoking, heredity, psychological factors such as stress, diabetes, taking medication such as antidepressants, contraceptives, antihypertensives, etc., hormonal changes that occur during pregnancy and adolescence are aggravating factors for the development of periodontal diseases.

Diagnosis of periodontal diseases

The diagnosis of the disease is achieved by a combination of careful clinical and radiographic examination, in the context of the scheduled dental examination. Until it reaches an advanced stage, periodontal disease is generally painless and without severe symptoms.

Symptoms

The appearance of one or more of the following symptoms is a reason to seek a periodontal examination:

– Red, swollen or sensitive gums that bleed automatically or after brushing

– Gums that have receded from the teeth

– Oral malodour that is subjective or indicated by the family environment

– Sensitivity of teeth to hot or cold

– Teeth that show mobility or have changed position in the mouth

– History of periodontal disease in a family member

– Type I or II diabetes mellitus

– Age over 30 years

– Taking medication for epilepsy, depression, hypertension

-Poor oral hygiene

Treatment and maintenance of the result

The treatment of periodontal diseases includes the following objectives

  • Cleaning the mouth of periodontal pathogens.
  • Stopping further progression of the disease leading to bone loss and tooth loss.
  • The regeneration (reconstruction) of lost bone where possible.
  • Maintaining the therapeutic effect through regular rechecks to prevent any recurrences.

In our clinic, we apply the most specialized therapeutic protocols for the treatment of periodontitis, while the possibility of biostimulation of cells (Biostimulation) is offered for the rapid healing of oral lesions or tooth hypersensitivity that may appear after treatment.

Specifically for the treatment of periodontitis, this is done following an advanced protocol of photochemical therapy that does not involve surgery, while it is completely painless for the patients.

With the exclusive use of LASER in combination with magnifying agents and with the help of special pharmaceutical preparations (antibiotics, vitamins), the radical elimination of the pathogenic microorganisms responsible for periodontitis is ensured while the occurrence of relapses and resurgence of the disease is reduced.\

The main advantages of the photochemical treatment method for patients are the following:

  • In the majority of cases, there is no need for anesthesia.
  • Bleeding of the gums is immediately eliminated.
  • Eliminates the physical and psychological suffering caused by surgical procedures.
  • Periodontal pockets are reduced.
  • The periodontal tissues are regenerated to a large extent.
  • It guarantees a much higher success rate compared to conventional methods of treating periodontitis.
  • Recurrences are eliminated.
  • Costs for patients are reduced, as there is no need for re-treatment, but maintenance of the therapeutic effect.

To maintain the effect of periodontal treatment, regular monitoring is required on a long-term basis.

Re-examination is an integral part of periodontal treatment. The main purpose of supportive treatment is to remove microbial deposits from the tooth area both supra- and sub-oral.

Re-examinations are scheduled at intervals varying from 2-6 months, depending on the patient’s needs. The main factors are the patient’s age, the severity of the initial condition, the result obtained after treatment and, most importantly, the effectiveness of the oral hygiene that the patient practices on a daily basis.
